Ayurveda and Alternative Medicine Hospital sets up ‘Medicinal Herbs Fair’ to promote the use of herbs for medical purposes in Nepal

The Ayurveda and Alternative Medicine Hospital held a ‘Medicinal Herbs Fair’ recently to promote the use of herbs as medicinal substances. The event took place at Nepal Academy, with the aim of increasing the population’s knowledge about medicinal herbs. This fair showcased valuable herbs that grow in the Himalayas, mountains, and Tarai regions of the country. During the event, visitors were provided with information about the identification and usage of herbs, and additional topics such as indigenous and endangered valuable herbs, identification of local herbs for treatment, use, and production were covered in depth.

Scientific sessions at the Medicinal Herbs Fair

In addition to the fair, scientific sessions about medicinal herbs and nutrition, climate change, environmental health, and sustainable conservation of herbs were conducted. Discussions were also held on commercial farming of medicinal herbs, collection of medicinal herbs through scientific methods for effective and efficient production, and efforts for sustainable conservation.

Valuable Herbs grown in Nepal

Dr Poonam Nepal, the Hospital Chief, shared that around 5,600 different types of herbs are used in Nepal to produce medicines. During the ‘Medicinal Herbs Fair’, rare herbs were displayed, of which some are specific to Nepal, and some are considered to be endangered. Furthermore, experts shared details about the uses and benefits of these herbs.

Effort for Sustainable Conservation of Medicinal Herbs

Conservation is crucial for maintaining the supply of medicinal herbs for future generations. Without proper attention and sustainable conservation, these herbs’ existence can be severely threatened. In the Medicinal Herbs Clinic, visitors learned more about the potential challenges of sustainable conservation, including the impact of climate change and environmental factors that may be destabilizing ecosystems and the livelihoods of indigenous communities that depend on them. Experts provided information about preventative measures that can be taken, including the establishment of conservation programs, proper storage of herbs, and the adoption of sustainable farming practices.

Conclusion

The Ayurveda and Alternative Medicine Hospital’s ‘Medicinal Herbs Fair’ provided ample information about the use, identification, and sustainability of medicinal herbs in Nepal. This fair was a successful step towards promoting natural remedies to treat medical conditions. With increasing consumer awareness, we may eventually see a reduction in the use of synthetic drugs, and a rise in demand for natural alternatives that can help improve and maintain overall health and wellbeing.
