Obliteride Seattle 2024: Raising Funds for Cancer Prevention, Detection, Treatment and Cures

Introduction

Seattle, July 11, 2024 – The Fred Hutch Cancer Center’s annual Obliteride bike ride and 5K walk/run is all set to witness a new record this year. Obliteride is inviting participants from across the nation to join the event on Aug. 10th, 2024, in Seattle. The event aims to unite patients, survivors, researchers, and medical professionals on a single platform to advance cancer prevention, detection, treatment, and cures through fundraising efforts.

Why is Obliteride important?

Obliteride is an important event as every dollar raised by the participants is vital for Fred Hutch to continue with its work to unite research and care, serve patients and communities, and help cure cancer faster. Obliteride brings together people who are personally affected by cancer, which includes patients, survivors, family and friends, researchers as well as healthcare professionals.

Participants and Registration

This year, the organizers are expecting around 5,000 participants to join the event. The registration for the event will continue till the day of the event, and participants can choose from a 5K walk/run option or 25-, 50-, and 100-mile bike routes. There is also a virtual option for people who are unable to make it in person but still want to participate in the event. Participants can fundraise for specific areas at the Hutch that align with their personal interests and priorities, including disease area, program, research, or clinician. Registration discounts are available for those who currently have or previously had cancer.

The Impact of Funds Raised Through Obliteride

Since 2013, Obliteride participants, donors, sponsors, and supporters have raised $48 million for Fred Hutch. All of these funds go directly to work at the center, thanks to the generous sponsors and supporters of the event. Obliteride funds have fueled new approaches for breast, colon, pancreatic, prostate, and other cancers, advances in data science for cancer research, community partnerships that improve health, therapies that retrain the body’s immune cells to attack cancers, and insights into diet, genetics, environmental factors and cancer risk.

The Hutch’s Mission and Vision

Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center is an independent, nonprofit organization that unites individualized care and advanced research to provide the latest cancer treatment options while accelerating discoveries that can prevent, treat and cure cancer and infectious diseases worldwide. Based in Seattle, the Hutch is the only National Cancer Institute-designated cancer center in Washington and has global recognition for its discoveries in cancer, infectious disease, and basic research, including bone marrow transplantation, immunotherapy, HIV/AIDS prevention, and COVID-19 vaccines. In addition to research, the center also operates eight clinical care sites that provide medical oncology, infusion, radiation, proton therapy, and other related services. Fred Hutch also serves as UW Medicine’s cancer program.

The Role of Obliteride in Support of the Hutch’s Mission

Obliteride plays a significant role in helping achieve the mission of the Hutch. The fundraising efforts of participants help support groundbreaking work that grants alone cannot cover. As Thomas J. Lynch Jr., MD, Fred Hutch president and director and holder of the Raisbeck Endowed Chair, stated, “Grants only cover about 70% of the cost of the life-saving advances we are pursuing here.”

Participant Benefits

Besides supporting cancer research, the event is also an opportunity for participants to connect with others who have experienced cancer in their workplace, family, or community. The Friday night party, which is an exclusive and pre-event gathering, enables participants to connect with each other and share their experiences. Furthermore, Obliteriders will enjoy a catered dinner and live entertainment from The Blue Wave Band. The main event on Aug. 10th, 2024, starts at 6:30 a.m., with route start times based on participation type and distance. All routes begin at the University of Washington and end with a finish-line celebration at Gas Works Park.

Conclusion

Obliteride is a powerful, one-of-a-kind community that brings together people from all walks of life to support cancer research. It is an excellent opportunity for participants to connect with others impacted by cancer and to raise funds for groundbreaking research at Fred Hutch. Obliteride’s success over the years has resulted in significant advancements in cancer and infectious disease research. The Hutch never rests, and neither do the Obliteriders who wish to help advance cancer prevention, detection, treatment, and cures. Join the Obliteride today and help make a difference.
