NCCIH Clearinghouse and PubMed for Complementary and Integrative Health Approaches
NCCIH Clearinghouse
The NCCIH Clearinghouse is a comprehensive database of publications and Federal databases of scientific and medical literature dedicated to complementary and integrative health approaches. Its aim is to provide credible information on different health topics such as mind and body practices, dietary supplements, and natural products. The database is updated regularly to ensure that the information is current. However, the Clearinghouse does not provide medical advice, treatment recommendations, or referrals to practitioners.
PubMed
As one of the largest medical databases in the world and a service of the National Library of Medicine, PubMed® provides publication information and brief summaries of scientific and medical journals. Its online search engine is searchable through various filters such as medical topics and publication dates. When it comes to complementary and integrative health approaches, PubMed includes a wide range of relevant information. However, it can be difficult to navigate and find the most pertinent information on a particular topic. To help with this effort, the NCCIH has developed a guidance document called How To Find Information About Complementary Health Approaches on PubMed to assist users in finding the information they need.
Office of Dietary Supplements (ODS)
What is the Office of Dietary Supplements (ODS)?
The ODS is a Federal government agency that aims to promote better understanding of dietary supplements and their health benefits. It provides support for research, shares research results, evaluates scientific information, and educates the public. ODS resources include publications like Dietary Supplements: What You Need To Know and fact sheets on a variety of supplement ingredients and products, such as vitamin D and multivitamin/mineral supplements.
How ODS Promotes Health through Dietary Supplements?
With so many supplements available in the market, it’s important to be well-informed before making any dietary choices. ODS evaluates scientific information and studies on dietary supplements to provide recommendations and promote better decision making for individuals. The aim of ODS is to bridge the gap between scientific research and the practical application of dietary supplements in our everyday lives.
What You Need to Know About Supplements?
Before taking any supplements, it is essential to consult a healthcare provider for advice. Supplements can interact with medications or have adverse side effects if taken in the wrong dose, and some supplements may pose risks for individuals with certain health conditions. Therefore, it’s important to discuss any decisions about treatment or care with your healthcare provider. The mention of any product, service, or therapy is not an endorsement by NCCIH, which is why it’s important to always seek medical advice before making any supplement use decisions.
